Royal Triple Doc "Roy"- 9 Year Old AQHA Gelding
I got Roy in May of 2007, and he was known as a "stupid horse" that will never learn anything but wouldn't hurt a fly. Roy was a lazy horse with many simple problems to be fixed. He didn't rein, side pass, rate, stand tied, or even flex his neck. He gets easily attached to other horses, so he would break the lead rope, or even almost run you over to avoid being left alone. He also had arena anxiety, and wouldn't stand still at competitions. He would even almost run people over!
Before I got Roy, he had been left in a small stall with no exercise for at least a few months so he was out of shape. It took me a couple of weeks to get him back into shape by working him hard one day and easy the next. I did a lot of ground work with him in my round pen, and after a couple of weeks, he was side passing and flexing his neck. Then the next couple of months, I did drills on him outside the round pen that involved stopping, backing up, side passing, flexing, rating and lead changes. I also took him out to work cattle every other weekend.
By the end of July 2007, I easily broke Roy to gunfire and competed at a few local monthly matches. We competed in our first big competition in mid September for the New Mexico State Championship. After a few stages, Roy was smooth and consistent. It took us less than a year to earn our first National and World Championship title.
Roy is now a two-time Western National Champion as well as a three-time World Champion shooting horse, and still has room for improvement. He now stands tied well, can side pass at a lope and is much calmer at competitions. He rates well enough that he can be a Level One to a Level Six shooting horse. Roy also does well with leg cues and neck reining, and has become a great rifle and shotgun horse.
